I hear ya about people taking personal responsibility for their current pay and position in lie. Makes perfect sense, but in the defense of a few, Wal-Mart may be the only decent employer in that community. I live in a small town and Wal-Mart does employ tons of people. The other jobs available, like the labor job you mentioned of loading and unloading trucks, they are few and far between. The other companies already have people in those positions and Wal-Mart seems to high a higher turnover rate, providing people with more opportunity for employment. Not always at a competitive wage.

You are right about the fact that they should have mentioned it. When they were interviewing the new CEO you think he would have said something to that effect. If you don’t like it…leave! Right on!

Funny you mentioned turnover at Walmart. The said that half of their new full-time employees leave the company within a year of being hired. No shock there.

I think thanks to the internet, more opportunities have opened up for people in small towns. CNBC did a special on eBay a few years back. One of the stories in that documentary was on a small family in a very small town of less than 1,000, where most of the families live in poverty. They started a movie distribution/sales business on eBay and now make thousands…and their business is booming!

New business opportunities and models are opening up… and that is great news for EVERYONE!

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Personal responsibility is a key to this entire feature Dave.

I did a short stint at Wal-Mart before leaving, why? Another company offered me $3 more an hour for a summer job. I’m not sitting tight at that point.

Homemade Mom makes a great point, though in many small towns they are the job market. With many manufacturing jobs stagnet – at best – it is better to make $10 an hour with no benefits than nothing. We are replacing the factory job with retail jobs and that is the scariest feature of all.
